Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) 17 March 2025 (SPS)– The Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) participated in the first meeting between the Permanent Representatives' Committee (PRC) and the newly appointed leadership of the African Union Commission (AUC) on Monday morning at the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The meeting was chaired by Mr. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, the newly elected Chairperson of the African Union Commission, and Ambassador Professor Miguel Cesar Domingos Bembe of Angola, in his capacity as the rotating Chairperson of the PRC. The session was also attended by the Deputy Chairperson of the AUC, Algerian Ambassador Salma Haddadi, along with the Commissioners of the AUC elected during the last AU Summit.

The meeting aimed to establish a framework for strengthening cooperation and improving efficiency within the African Union, laying the foundation for advancing the implementation of the priorities set by the Heads of State and Government of the AU.

During the meeting, several member states expressed their willingness to cooperate with the new AUC leadership to ensure the successful implementation of the Union’s priorities. The session also provided an opportunity for permanent representatives to voice their concerns and align their work strategies with the Commission’s agenda, focusing on governance, economic integration, and conflict resolution.

The participation of the Sahrawi Mission in this high-level dialogue reaffirms SADR’s role as an active AU member. In his address during the meeting, the Sahrawi representative defended the founding principles of the Union, emphasized the promotion of peace and security, and underscored the importance of continental integration.

He also highlighted the necessity of strengthening AU mechanisms to tackle ongoing challenges and implement the necessary administrative and financial reforms to advance the organization.

The PRC and the AUC leadership are expected to continue their engagements in the coming months to ensure that the African Union operates with renewed efficiency in achieving the continent’s aspirations as outlined in Agenda 2063.

The Sahrawi Republic was represented at this meeting by Ambassador Malainin Lakhal, Deputy Permanent Representative to Ethiopia and the African Union. (SPS)
