DURHAM, N.C. — A man has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run crash that killed a Durham woman Sunday night.

Around 10 p.m., officers with the Durham Police Department responded to a crash involving a pedestrian near 109 N.C. Highway 54 West in front of the Circle K gas station.

According to officials, 39-year-old Christina Marie Hayes was trying to cross the street when she was struck by an unknown SUV that fled the scene.

Hayes was transported to a local hospital, where she died as a result of her injuries.

William Patrick Carl, 65, of Durham was arrested Tuesday and charged with felony hit-and-run involving serious injury or death.

Police located a damaged 2018 Honda CRV registered to Carl that matched the vehicle description given by witnesses.

Parts No. 4,5, 9 and 13 in the diagram below were recovered from the scene and should be missing from the SUV.

Police said speed, alcohol and drugs do not appear to be related to the crash.
