3300 South stretch closed in Millcreek after crash kills driver

A man is dead and a woman is in good condition after a single-vehicle crash that has blocked east- and westbound traffic on 3300 South, near 950 East.

Driver Ibrahim Yassin, 22, died at the scene. His 22-year-old female passenger was hospitalized. No one else was in the car.

Police had reported that both occupants of the vehicle were dead, but they later said a hospital gave them bad information. The woman was admitted to the hospital in serious condition and was upgraded to good condition by Friday morning.

Witnesses said the car was speeding westbound on 3300 South about 4:30 p.m., weaving in and out of traffic, according to Unified police Detective Ken Hansen. Yassin lost control, Hansen said, and the car was swerving or on its side when it slammed into a power pole.

The pole moved about 5 feet from its base, Hansen said. He was not aware of power outages, but he said 3300 South is closed from 900 East to 1100 East. Hansen said he expects the road to be closed until 9 p.m.

He said it’s too early to say whether drugs or alcohol played a role, but that speed and recklessness were a factor.
