Spanish wind energy giant Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy has successfully secured 26 separate orders from various customers in India worth a total of 326 megawatts.

Announced on Monday, Siemens Gamesa confirmed that it had secured multiple wind power orders from several leading Independent Power Producers and various industrial customers across India. In total, the company won 26 separate orders, worth a total of 326 MW (megawatts), for which it will provide the complete infrastructure and supply, erection, and commissioning. Siemens Gamesa will provide 135 of its G114-2.0 MW wind turbines and 28 of its G97-2.0 MW turbines for projects which range between 2 MW and 60 MW in size and which are all set to be commissioned by March.

“We are happy to announce these new deals in India,” Ramesh Kymal, CEO of Siemens Gamesa’s onshore business in India. “These orders show a positive sign of development in the market and it certainly boosts our confidence significantly as we gear up towards the next growth phase for Siemens Gamesa in India. With the support of our loyal customers and an efficient team we are looking forward to a great 2018.”

India has been a tough market for the wind industry of late, with falling tariff prices and a virtual cessation of interest in wind energy over the past few months. With wind energy tariffs falling dramatically, state governments no longer sign up to Power Purchase Agreements, instead pushing developers to rely on auctions. The good news, however, is that the Indian Government has announced a timeline to auction 20 GW (gigawatts) worth of wind energy capacity through to March 2020, sparking hope for the wind energy industry in India. Specifically, the Indian Government has recently announced it will be auctioning off 6 GW of new capacity within the next four to five months, a move that Siemens Gamesa hopes will provide a much-needed boost to the industry and accelerate future capacity additions.
