Update:

It happens all the time - you find a product that you like and can afford, then it suddenly disappears from the shelves for good. Many Costo Gold Star and Executive card members are experiencing the same feeling with the news that one popular item is no longer available at any of the retailers’ 600 warehouses.

Slow sales hit Costco soy milk sales

The rumor surfaced on a Reddit thread when a user contacted Costco directly to find out what has happened to stocks of Kirkland Signature soy milk, as the product seemed to be missing from stores - “perhaps temporarily due to a supplier issue”.

Customer support responded: “Thank you for your feedback regarding the KS Soy Milk. Unfortunately, the KS Soy Milk was discontinued due to slow sales. However, we plan on bringing in a branded Soy Milk as an item rotation throughout the year. The next rotation is due to arrive in August.”

Confirmation that hit home with other fans of Costco’s own soya milk in the thread, with one replying that it was perfect for those who are lactose intolerant: " I used to buy the Kirkland shelf stable soy by the case. Then it went missing for what seemed like two years. There was vanilla and another variety. The one in the lavender case showed up recently and I have been buying it again. Sad if it goes missing again“.

Others noted that alternative brands were either more expensive, too sweet or simply not as nice. Used as a alternative in coffee and protein shakes and smoothies, Costco previously sold the milk in vanilla and plain flavors.

What is soy milk?

Soy milk is a plant-based dairy alternative to cow’s milk, while providing a similar amount of protein and calcium as well as other minerals. Made from soybeans or soy floue, water, and oil, it is a popular choice for those who have a milk protein allergy. It is available commercially in both unsweetened and sweetened formats.

What is Costco’s Kirkland Signature brand?

Costco launched the Kirkland Signature line of products in 1995 to offer customers quality goods at a lower price. The KS house brand includes everything from groceries to clothing, even gasoline - usually priced 20 percent less than most brandname equivalents. KS goods at available at all of the company’s 900 warehouse locations globally.

For now, shoppers will have to do without their preferred brand of soy milk and wait to see what Costco replace it with this summer.
