ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — An annual buttery tradition, International Waffle Day is coming Tuesday, March 25. If you are wondering where to satisfy your waffle cravings, we have you covered. Asheville is something of a foodie haven, and lucky for us, that includes plenty of waffle-wielding restaurants. Here are two options for you to choose from.

Sunny Point Café

“Sunny Point Café is a family-owned, independent restaurant serving upscale comfort food,” general manager Michelle Alexander told 828newsNOW. “Whether you want breakfast for lunch or a scrumptious dessert for breakfast. We take pride in our made-from-scratch products and farm-to-table approach with our menu selections.”

Sunny Point’s menu includes dishes with produce grown onsite in its garden.

“During peak growing season, staff work daily in the garden harvesting ingredients for our specials – hard to get much fresher!” Alexander wrote.

“Our waffle is actually on our menu as a chicken and waffle sandwich,” Alexander explained. “It is one of our signature dishes and has been on the menu for years. It is a waffle sandwich with fried chicken breast, pimento cheese, jalapeno jam and our famous maple black pepper bacon.”

If you want to get funky, Alexander says, “We like to do for a daily special, one with blueberry compote, blackberry cream cheese topping or a praline butter topping.”

The Smokin’ Onion

“The Smokin’ Onion serves plant-based comfort food,” explained co-owners and spouses Parker and Keems Schultz.

“One of our restaurant’s best sellers is our sweet potato waffle,” the duo told 828newsNOW. “We roast and blend in sweet potato to our batter.”

The in-house made sweet potato waffles are served fresh all day with vegan chick’n. If you are feeling especially adventurous, “Order our chick’n and waffle straight up with our smoked onion jam and organic maple syrup but sub in our Asheville Hot house made chick’n,” the co-owners stated.

The Smokin’ Onion operates out of a food truck on Tuesdays. You can try the waffle sandwiches at New Belgium Brewing from noon-7 p.m. on International Waffle Day.
