A popular national chain of Italian restaurants is treating mums to a free Aperol Spritz this Mother’s Day. While the offer is available for one day only, Sunday, March 30, across the rest of the UK, Scottish mums can indulge in the freebie from Friday, March 28 to Sunday, March 30.
The generous gesture comes thanks to a twist of local legislation. While the SNP’s alcohol crackdowns have restricted Scotland’s drinking culture over the past 18 years, including the Alcohol etc (Scotland) Act 2010, which banned “irresponsible drinks promotions,” Bella Italia is offering this special treat to mothers as a nod to the occasion.
The Alcohol etc (Scotland) Act 2010, which banned "irresponsible drinks promotions" and required price changes on alcoholic beverages to be in place for at least 72 hours, effectively put an end to many traditional 'happy hours' in Scottish pubs.
As a result, Bella Italia is offering Scottish mums a complimentary Aperol Spritz for three days instead of just one, in line with the legislation.

The offer is available at any Bella Italia restaurant across Scotland as part of the chain’s 'Feel Bella' initiative, which aims to celebrate the joy of dining together. A soft drink alternative will also be on offer.
A spokesperson for Bella Italia said: "Mothers deserve to be celebrated, and what better way to show appreciation than by sharing a meal together?
"Our Mother's Day Aperol Spritz giveaway is a small way to say thank you while enjoying great food, great company, and an Italian dining experience. Through our 'Feel Bella’ initiative, we want to bring people together and create special moments that will be cherished for a long time."
Bella Italia, with 70 restaurants across the UK, operates just three in Scotland: Inverness, Glasgow Sauchiehall Street, and Edinburgh North Bridge. For full details on terms and conditions, participating locations, and more, visit BellaItalia.co.uk.
The 72-hour alcohol promotion rule also led to Scottish dads enjoying a free pint of Stella Artois to celebrate Father's Day last year, with the offer available from June 14-16 in Scotland, while it was limited to Sunday, June 16 in England and Wales.
