Senegal-Customs: Application of an additional tax on alcohol, the specific tax on tobacco now set at 70%

The Director General of Customs announced the changes to the specific tax applicable to tobacco and the additional tax on alcohol and alcoholic liquids.

“Following community directives and finance laws, certain provisions of the General Tax Code have been amended as follows: In addition to a 50% excise duty rate applicable to alcohol and alcoholic liquids, an additional tax is now applied to alcoholic beverages, regardless of their container.” This additional tax is determined as follows: “800 francs per liter of beverage for alcohols with a strength of more than 6° of pure alcohol and less than or equal to 15°, and 3,000 francs per liter of beverage for alcohols with a strength of more than 15°,” it was specified.

Another important change was made: “The liquidation of the additional tax is no longer based on the alcohol content of each liter of beverage, but on the total quantity of alcoholic beverage.”

Regarding tobacco, it was stated that “the specific tax applicable to tobacco and tobacco products imported into Senegal is now set at a rate of 70%.” The document specifies that only tobacco received in bulk, in manoques, or leaves is exempt from this specific tax.
