Atlanta brewery Scofflaw Brewing Co. is opening next year at the Oxton entertainment district in Buckhead, part of a renovation currently underway at the Piedmont Center office park.

Scofflaw’s newest location will feature a taproom and brewing facility offering several of its beers on tap, along with a few special beers brewed on site only available in Buckhead. A patio will offer seating overlooking the courtyard.

The Oxton district becomes the fourth location of Scofflaw Brewing in Atlanta, which includes the original brewery and taproom in the Bolton neighborhood, a research and development brewery and taproom at the Works in Underwood Hills, and the “Beer Barn” at State Farm Arena. The brewery is known for its Basement and Hooligan IPAs, seasonal sours, and barrel-aged imperial stouts.

Owned by Matt Shirah and Travis Herman, Scofflaw Brewing first opened in 2015 on MacArthur Boulevard near Crest Lawn Memorial Park in northwest Atlanta. In 2019, Shirah and Herman expanded their beer operation with the opening of beer bar Scofflaw Beer Barn at State Farm Arena. The “barn” referenced in the name refers to Scofflaw’s logo featuring a goat. “The goat represents us well. We like to push the limits and break boundaries,” Shirah said at the time of the beer bar’s opening. A year later, the partners opened Dr. Scofflaw’s Laboratory and Beer Garden at the Works off of Chattahoochee Avenue.

Shirah and Herman have touted their self-professed reputation as “trailer trash brewers” in the past, and frequently engage in irreverent humor on social media and in the press. A failed 2018 PR stunt landed the brewery in hot water, however, after it apparently offered free beer to Trump supporters as part of a promotional partnership with controversial U.K. brewery BrewDog. Shirah and Herman claimed at the time that the dubious press release sent to nearly 11,000 journalists and news outlets by a U.K. public relations agency was “absolute nonsense” and was published without their consent. Despite denying any involvement in the poorly managed stunt between the two breweries, some insiders within the Atlanta beer industry still questioned Scofflaw’s connection to BrewDog and the problematic press release.

The Oxton comprises over 35,000 square feet of ground-floor office space at Piedmont Center, designed by Atlanta architecture firm Square Feet Studio. In addition to Scofflaw Brewing, the district will eventually feature a mix of food and beverage spots, retail shops, and a central courtyard for gatherings and additional seating.
