'Get a shot and have a beer': Anheuser-Busch offers adults a free drink with Biden's vaccine goal

Seventy percent of U.S. adults need to get at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine to meet the president's goal, and time is running out.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — This Bud's for you, America.

But only if enough people get a COVID-19 vaccine -- and the clock is ticking.

Anheuser-Busch recently announced it'll buy every adult a free beer, seltzer, non-alcoholic drink or one of its many other brands should at least 70 percent of adult Americans receive a COVID-19 shot by July 4.

That's President Joe Biden's latest vaccination goal set about a month ago. The Washington Post noted the president referenced the beer company's campaign during a renewed push to get vaccines into arms last week.

"That’s right. Get a shot and have a beer," Biden said. "Free beer for everyone 21 years or over to celebrate the independence from the virus."

There is an uphill climb to reach the 70-percent mark, however. According to a recent analysis of vaccine data by The New York Times, the U.S. only will hit 68 percent by July 4 at its current pace. Some states have already hit the goal, including California, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts.

It might take more than a year for Alabama and Mississippi to reach 70-percent of adults who have received a COVID-19 vaccine, the Times found. In Florida, 60.3 percent of adults have received at least one dose, according to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Florida is projected to hit 67 percent by July 4 at its current pace, according to the Times.

Anheuser-Busch's campaign is the latest initiative to nudge people to get a vaccine in an effort to prevent further COVID-19 infections. If the goal is met, people are asked to take a picture of them enjoying a favorite place to enjoy a drink and, in turn, will receive a $5 virtual debit card.

"We pride ourselves on stepping up both in times of need and in times of great celebration, and the past year has been no different," Anheuser-Busch CEO Michel Doukeris said in a statement. "As we look ahead to brighter days with renewed optimism, we are proud to work alongside the White House to make a meaningful impact for our country, our communities and our consumers."
