As part of the makeover, the existing building and the former O'Neill's pub next door are set to be developed into a larger bar area, with a hotel providing accommodation for 90 people on the upper floors and a new heritage centre in the basement.

Wetherspoon's spokesman Eddie Gershon said: "The Moon Under Water has been a landmark in Wolverhampton for more than two decades.

"The planned investment in the pub, hotel and heritage centre, highlights our commitment to the pub and also Wolverhampton itself.

"We are planning a major redevelopment which we believe will be great news for the pub, its customers, and just as importantly, Wolverhampton."

The 40,000 sq ft space above the pub, with its Art Deco frontage, has been empty for more than 30 years after being home to the old Co-op store.

The site was home to a furniture emporium in late Victorian times before being divided into smaller shops, one of which was the Co-operative Society’s drapery store. The Co-op later took over all of the shops and redeveloped the premises before opening in 1931.

Wetherspoon's bosses have said that the pub will remain open for business while work is carried out, with both the new-look premises and the hotel due to open later this year. The redevelopment is set to create around 50 new jobs.
