EAGLE BUTTE, S.D. -- A 42-year-old man who lives in far northwest South Dakota has been sentenced to 3.5 years in prison for beating up a woman after she refused to give him money for alcohol.

Celby Noisy Hawk Jr. of Eagle Butte on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation was convicted of assault resulting in serious bodily injury in the incident last June 9.

He was sentenced last week.

In the incident, the U.S. Attorney’s office said when Noisy Hawk asked for the money, the woman told him he was already very drunk. The denial resulted in an argument between Noisy Hawk and the woman, who then called the police department. Prior to law enforcement arriving, Noisy Hawk punched the victim several times in the head and face, and when the victim attempted to walk away, Noisy Hawk hit her again causing her to fall and break her ankle. The punches to the victim’s face caused numerous head and facial injuries, including a hemorrhage.
