Indonesia Condemns Deadly Mosque Attack in Egypt's North Sinai
Jakarta. Indonesia has issued a statement condemning a mosque attack in Egypt's North Sinai province on Friday (24/11) that has killed at least 184 people and injured 125 others.
No Indonesians were among the victims of the attack, the government said.
"The government of Indonesia conveys its deepest condolences and sympathy for the victims of the attack and pray for a speedy recovery for the injured," the Foreign Minnistry said in the statement.
Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi has already contacted her Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry directly, the ministry said.
The Indonesian embassy in Cairo is working closely with local authorities to update the situation.
"No Indonesian has been injured in the attack. According to our data, no Indonesian citizen is living or staying in North Sinai," Indonesian ambassador to Egypt Helmy Fauzi told reporters in a text message.
Ambassador Helmy said the deadly explosion in the mosque was caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) set off right next to the Ar-Raudhah mosque during the Friday prayer.
The terror group that apparently triggered the bomb also shot Muslims attending the Friday prayer, he said.
Local authorities are now on the hunt for the terrorists, the ambassador said.
