Saudi Arabia’s national air carrier, Saudia Airlines, has issued a new dress code for its passengers -do not expose arms or legs. The flight carrier even said that it will refuse to fly people who deviate from it. The code of conduct section on Saudia’s official website asks that travellers are not “clothed in a manner that would cause discomfort or offence to other passengers. Women exposing legs or arms, or wearing too thin or too tight clothes and men wearing shorts exposing legs.” The dress code by the airliner started an online debate with the hashtag #SaudiaAirlines trending. To many people’s surprise, some supported the ban as a ‘good step’.

Daily Mail reports that new norms were spotted in two sections of the airline’s website – both now removed. One of the norms was under the ‘passengers’ code of conduct’ heading, while other was under its ‘dress code’ information. “Saudia may refuse to transport passengers or may remove passengers from the flight at any point for not complying with its dress code,” it stated, as per the Daily Mail. Apart from these, the airliner has also banned the carrying or consumption of alcohol on its flights.

The airline policy also mentions that passengers are breaking conduct if they have “an offensive odour not caused by disability or illness”. The Twitter responded quickly after the news broke out. “Can British airlines refuse “offensive headdresses”?? Bet not!’ one said, while another wrote: ‘Discrimination against women is #nothingtodowithIslam.”
