BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Our Lady of The Lake Children’s Hospital hosted their first NICU Reunion, where they reunited children who graduated from their NICU with the nurses and other medical staff who cared for them.

Spencer Lucas, the Director of Nursing over the NICU at OLOL Children’s, says this is a way to celebrate the battles these children faced.

“Not all the NICU patients get to go home. So, they typically have some pretty intense challenges in the hospital. So, this is a celebration of all the milestones that they’ve made this far,” added Lucas.

Jonathan Sicard, a father of a NICU graduate, says he is thankful for the event and is glad to see the people that took care of his daughter, “especially after taking care of her for as long as they did with the uncertainty that we had,” said Sicard.

Sicard’s daughter Marcie, was born with Hydrocephalus, which means she had extra fluid in her brain. After multiple surgeries, she had spent around 27 days in the NICU. Her father says the nurses were not only there for Marcie but made the whole process easy for the entire family.

“They were there for her obviously, but they were there for us. There were a few moments that there were some breakdowns, but they stayed with us, walked us through everything, kept a smile on our face as much as they could I mean, your baby is laying in a NICU bed you think it’s doom and gloom,” added, Sicard.

Lucas says he hopes to keep bringing this back every year.
