BINGHAMTON, NY (WIVT/WBGH) – In about 60 days, Binghamton will be a host city, and welcome over one-hundred vintage cars before they finish the rest of their race across the East Coast.

On June 26th, the Great Race will make an overnight stop in Binghamton as 135 vintage cars make their way from Kentucky to Maine.

Vintage race cars will be featured along Washington Street and by the Visions Veterans Memorial Arena in Downtown Binghamton.

The cars will arrive shortly after the opening ceremonies at 4:45 p.m. and will be on display until 8.

The chair of the great race, Robin Alpaugh says at the Arena, there will be live music by Ragtime Rick Pedro, and 5th Gear Overdrive plus food and beverage options.

The Chair of the Great Race, Robin Alpaugh says, “This year’s race begins in Kentucky on Saturday, June 22nd and concludes in Maine on Sunday the 30th. And cars just like the 29′ Ford behind us, are going to be competing to earn a perfect score. Not by speed, but by time. There’s points taken off for being a second too fast or a second too slow.”

Alpaugh says as a host city, you need to prepare meals for upwards of 500 drivers and their support staff.

He says, in partnership with the Binghamton Rotary Club and through sponsorships, the event is free to the public.

Alpaugh says in 2011, Binghamton won the title of Best Host City, and he’s working to win it again.
