Starbucks is continuing its mission to go green.
The popular coffee chain is now rolling out recyclable and strawless lids in the United States and Canada in an effort to move away from using plastic straws, the company announced Thursday.
Designed to be environmentally friendly, the new lids will be “the standard” for Starbucks’ iced coffee, espresso and tea orders, among other beverages.
“Recyclable, strawless lids for customers across the U.S. and Canada is another step in our journey to reduce our environmental footprint,” the company’s chief sustainability officer, Michael Kobori, said in a statement.
“As we move closer toward our 2030 target of a 50 percent reduction in waste sent to landfills, the long-standing history of innovation within Starbucks, partnership across the industry and changing consumer behavior remain fundamental to our purpose and our prosperity as an organization.”
Starbucks restaurants will still have straws available for customers who request them.
The company announced plans to move toward getting rid of straws back in 2018 and has tried out new lids over the past year.
“A recyclable, strawless lid becoming the standard for iced drinks is one small way we can give more than we take from the planet,” Andy Corlett, Starbucks’ director of global packaging solutions and innovations, said in a statement.
“This is a significant moment for Starbucks as we work to reduce waste and safeguard the environment.”
